Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General

  • Why is FTCSC realigning grade configurations and school boundaries?
    • FTCSC has grown over 1,000 students in the last three years.  We anticipate continued growth. Currently many of our buildings are at or above capacity.  In addition, our buildings were built for an elementary school, intermediate, junior high and high school.  Kitley Elementary School was built to be an intermediate school and not an elementary school. FTMS West was also built to be an intermediate school and not a middle school. The grade reconfiguration will change our buildings back to their original design.
  • What were the goals used to decide on the new grade alignment and boundaries?
    • Keep elementary boundaries intact as much as possible
    • Allow for growth at the Elementary Schools (less than 85% capacity)
    • Balance Kitley K-3 to the others schools as much as possible
    • Utilize space efficiently until a referendum can be passed
    • Start Middle School later in the morning for brain development
  • What would the new grade configuration look like?
    • Elementary Schools: Kindergarten – 3rd Grade
      • Acton Elementary School, Adams Elementary School, Arlington Elementary School, Bunker Hill Elementary School, South Creek Elementary School, Thompson Crossing Elementary School
    • Intermediate Schools: 4th Grade – 6th Grade
      • Edgewood Intermediate School, Kitley Intermediate School
    • Franklin Central Junior High: 7th Grade and 8th Grade
    • Franklin Central High School: 9th Grade – 12th Grade
  • Is there a “feeder” system for the elementary schools and the intermediate schools?
    • Yes, Arlington, Bunker Hill and Thompson Crossing students will attend Edgewood Intermediate School.  Acton, Adams and South Creek students will attend Kitley Intermediate School.
  • What would be the new student start and end times?
    • 7:30 – 2:15 = Franklin Central High School, Monday-Thursday
      •  FCHS will still have their CCR Early Release Friday
    • 8:20 – 3:05 = Franklin Central Junior High

On Friday, FC will continue their current College and Career Readiness Early Release schedule.

Elementary Schools

Acton, Adams, Arlington, Bunker Hill, South Creek, Thompson Crossing

  • What is the benefit of a Kindergarten – 3rd Grade Elementary School?
    • The curriculum in Kindergarten to 3rd grade is focused on preparing students to learn.  The focus is on developing a solid foundation of math and literacy. This grade configuration will allow the elementary schools to focus on developing math and literacy skills.
  • Are the current Elementary Schools boundaries changing?
    • Our goal was to impact the elementary school boundaries as little as possible.  With the exception of Kitley students moving to other elementary schools, the rest of the elementary boundaries stay very similar to current boundaries.
  • Will you change the elementary boundaries again next year?
    • We accomplished our goal of providing space in the elementary schools with no building over 85% capacity.  With the new grade configuration, our projected capacity would be:
      •  Acton – 80%, Adams – 80%, Arlington – 76%, Bunker Hill – 81%, South Creek – 83% and Thompson Crossing – 80%.
  • Which intermediate school will my elementary school feed into.
    • Edgewood Intermediate School – Arlington, Bunker Hill and Thompson Crossing.
    • Kitley Intermediate School – Acton, Adams and South Creek.
  • Will the elementary schools have Early Release Wednesdays?
    • No, all elementary schools will have the same start and end time Monday to Friday.

Intermediate Schools

Edgewood, Kitley

  • Does the Intermediate School boundaries follow a feeder system?
    • Yes:
      • Edgewood Intermediate School – Arlington, Bunker Hill and Thompson Crossing.
      • Kitley Intermediate School – Acton, Adams and South Creek.
  • What is the benefit of a 4th grade – 6th grade Intermediate School?
    • The complexity of the state standards continues to increase each year.  The intermediate model allows for teachers to focus on one or two content areas.  It also provides students with a gradual release of transitions to better prepare students for junior high and high school.
  • What will the school day look like for 4th and 5th grade?
    • For 4th and 5th grade, teachers will form 3 member teams.  One teacher will teach math, one teacher will teach literacy and one teacher will teach social studies/science.  Each block will be a 90 minute block. This will allow teachers to become content experts in their area. This will also allow for students to begin learning how to move to a new classroom and experience multiple teachers at a more controlled smaller scale.  4th grade and 5th grade students will receive more independence as they move from 4th grade to 5th grade.
  • What will the school day look like for 6th grade?
    • For 6th grade, the school day will look the same as it does currently.  Students will be able to participate in orchestra, band or choir. 6th grade students will have lockers.  They will also be able to participate in the same sports as they currently do – cross country, swimming, wrestling and track.
  • Will you change the Intermediate School boundaries next year?
    • No, we project that Edgewood Intermediate School would be at 91% capacity and Kitley Intermediate School would be at 95% capacity.  This does mean that with continued growth, we would need to address adding an addition to each school.
  • Will both Edgewood Intermediate School and Kitley Intermediate School attend Franklin Central Junior High?
    • Yes, both intermediate schools will attend Franklin Central Junior High and then Franklin Central High School
  • Will Edgewood Intermediate School and Kitley Intermediate School have Early Release Wednesdays?
    • No, Edgewood Intermediate School and Kitley Intermediate School will have the same start and end time Monday to Friday.
  • Will Intermediate students and Junior High students be riding the same bus?

Franklin Central Junior High

  • What is the benefit of a 7th grade – 8th grade Junior High?

  • Is Franklin Central Junior High at capacity?
    • FCJH would open at capacity.  With that said, we are currently building an addition to the building.  Once the addition is completed, FCJH would be at 81% capacity.

  • 4th – 6th grade REACH students will attend their home elementary school’s feeder.  For example, a 4th grade, 5th grade or 6th grade REACH student with the home elementary school of Arlington, Bunker Hill or Thompson Crossing will attend Edgewood Intermediate School.  A 4th grade, 5th grade or 6th grade REACH student with the home elementary school of Acton, Adams or South Creek will attend Kitley Intermediate School.
  • Students in 4th and 5th grade will have the opportunity to receive REACH services in ELA OR Math if they qualify.  Currently, students in 4th and 5th grades must qualify in both content areas to receive Tier III REACH services at both intermediate schools.
