Statement regarding social media incident

Parents,

In response to the statement regarding the social media threat against Franklin Central High School. Social media is both a blessing and a curse. While the spread of good information is beneficial to the community at large, false information can be very disrupting. The post that was shared so many times last night was evidence of bad information that led to a very large disruption.

Disruptions to the educational environment at any of our schools will not be tolerated. Not only will they not be tolerated, incidents that rise to the level of criminal activity will lead to arrest and potential prosecution. During the course of the investigation, it was evident that the non-credible threat rose to the level of criminal activity by invoking fear among the members of the Flashes community. After a thorough investigation the source of the post was identified, arrested, and will be facing consequences as outlined by the FCHS Code of Conduct.

While the vagueness of released statements can be frustrating, it is important that we protect the integrity of the investigation for both us and our partners in the schools.

I appreciate those that contacted the school directly last night. Preventing the spread of bad information is very difficult. However, it is important to ensure the situation is handled based on the facts and not on hearsay.

The Franklin Township Community Schools Police Department and our entire school community will always place a priority on the safety and security of our students and staff. If you ever have a question or concern, I encourage you to contact us directly. We would be more than happy to help.

Thanks,

Kenneth Short

Chief of School Police
